Editor,

As I approach my 78th summer on this planet I have been encouraged to remain at home, but if I leave to purchase food, medications or adult beverages I am to maintain at least a six foot distance from other humans. So, what have we learned so far? The spread of this virus is not curtailed in Italy, and is growing in New York, Washington State, and California. We have had a few cases in Johnson and Linn counties, and we should expect other areas in our locality to experience infection. Factually person to person transmission will continue until there is a flattening of the "curve". When that will occur is not known nor even speculated, so we must continue to be on guard. Eventually the virus will die out as it requires a human host to survive and multiply. Even though many in the White House advised and many Democrats criticized the move to restrict travel from Europe and China these actions were the right course; this act given in January while Congress was embroiled in Impeachment proceeding gave our medical practitioners time to prepare. Also weeks later closing our Southern and Northern border was again the right move. It is unfortunate that our bureaucrats moved initially too slowly, but it seems to me they are doing their very best to catch up. Giving the green light to States to move faster if able was another good decision. Also many manufacturers that have the ability are switching their manufacturing to medical masks and protective clothing and equipment. Much like what happened in WWII. An Amen to 3M and others! But, we have also learned that the distribution system in place can give rise to price gouging. I recommend that a government entity purchase these items directly from the manufacturer at a reasonable price and distribute these items to the states and localities where needed.

It also appears that many who are below the age of 55 and with no underlying health problems have a relatively mild case. Older citizens and those with pulmonary disorders, like myself, are at much greater risk of a serious illness.

I have heard that older citizens have a much more mature immune system which seems to work against the body in that the lungs are susceptible to pneumonia. Fluid in the lungs seems to be the leading cause of fatalities. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), sold under the brand name Plaquenil, is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of certain types of malaria and has shown to inhibit the auto immune system so that fluid does not accumulate in the lungs in life threatening amounts. In a French study this drug given along with Zithromax (Z - pack) has within five days reduced the level of virus to zero; these drugs have been in use for decades. Is an off label use in the treatment of Covid-19 in order?- what do we have to lose? The Federal Medical people need data to show effectiveness and license the drug for this use, but in the meantime many people will die. I don't think we should wait for this - there is, I think, the "right to try" an exec. order by the President in use now for people who are terminal. Again what do we have to lose? Learned this AM Dr. Mehmet Oz is starting a study to show effectiveness of this treatment regime.

Will there be no end to the bickering, blaming, name calling, false information, miss direction and unwarranted criticism of the President and the team dealing with this unseen , menace. This is an instructional moment - why are over 90% of our medications and over half of our pain relievers manufactured in either China or India. Over regulation, labor outsourcing what? It is obvious we need to bring this manufacture home so that we can insure supply and quality!

I have learned this AM that Speaker Pelosi and minority leader Schumer are standing in the way of passing a bipartisan money bill which would benefit workers and businesses. Workers need money and businesses need revenue for overhead expenses. This pandemic will be over at some time, workers need a company to come back to. Time is of the essence. It is obvious that these Democrats are putting themselves first rather than the American people. They should be ashamed!

While at Iowa State University enrolled in advanced AFROTC we were taught aspects of leadership. It is most important for a Commander to delegate-delegate-delegate. No one person can be privy to all aspects of solving a problem or mounting a military operation, thus- a capable staff is most important to the successful outcome of the operation. Summed up in few words - A Commander can delegate authority, but not responsibility. Perhaps the Administration was slow to recognize the true danger, but they are doing the right things at the moment - Democrat leadership is another matter, however. Again China is a clear and present danger to our country and all democratic governments. We must distance ourselves from our dependence on them for many of our products from leather to drugs to rare earth elements. One of our generation five aircraft the F-35 requires 2,000 pounds of rare earth elements - all coming from China. This dependence is probably the most stupid thing our politicians have done in the last four decades.

Regards,

John Stiegelmeyer

NG March 24, 2020, 4:59 pm John, You ask what we have to lose if we try the Hydroxychloroquine medication that your president falsely touted as a cure for the virus. Well a man in Arizona lost his life because he lisstened to impeached 45 and took it as a preventative and died. Another lady took it also, still alive but very very sick. Impeached 45 is not a Dr. and needs to keep his mouth shut and give NO MORE medical advice. He is not smart enough. The best thing he could have done is clear back in January when he first got word of this virus he should have not called it a hoax, he should have not said it was a Democratic hoax and now he should have never called it the Chinese virus so that Chinese Americans are being harassed in their own country besides many many other lies he tells on national TV every day.

Besides that the reason the Democrats said no to the latest bills are because Steve Mnuchin was given the authority to allow the airline execs to use the money for stock buybacks even though in the beginning it looks like they couldn't do that. How nice huh? Another thing was billions in a slush fund that Mnuchin could hand out to big business, whom ever he wanted, and they could use the money for 6 months without anyone knowing they have it. Those receiving the money would include your president impeached 45 for his hotel which isn't doing so well. So why should the tax payers bail out his business, his hotel? I object to that because he is not supposed to profit off of the presidency. Thank God the Democrats are paying attention and stopping the high spending Republicans. Then people like Grassley get on FaceBook and tell a big sob story and you write a letter to the editor and tell another sob story about how terrible the Democrats are but you fail to tell the whole story. You are not being very honest are you John?

JS March 25, 2020, 3:47 pm Firstly: The couple who got so seriously ill drank a chemical used to clean fish tanks. You can only get the drugs President Trump mentioned with a prescription from a physician.
Secondly: The drug I listed was as I said therapy for malaria and has been around for some 70 years. I probably took that drug while in country in Thailand during the Vietnam war. You obviously got your information from false news outlets. As I mentioned Dr. Oz is running a test of both hydroxychloroquine z-pack (an antibiotic I have taken many times) on some 200 plus people with the illness. the first success of this therapy came from a well known French Doctor. I'll take your apology anytime.

JS March 25, 2020, 10:09 pm Secondly: The verbiage you attribute to Mr. Mnuchin did not occur because the legislation had not yet been passed by the House or Senate, so it appears what you believe to be true just isn’t so. The major and regional airlines are flat on their back. They can not exist without paying passengers. I was employed by a major airline (Trans World Airlines) for over 30 years. I also had the experience of being furloughed twice totaling a period of nine years. None of the air carriers have ever experienced this type of economic depression. The carrier I worked for had over 28,000 employees. I do not know how many employees United, Southwest, American and Delta have, but I would suspect that a good many of them have no job right now. The latest news I heard was that American and United would cut their schedules by at least 60-70% until the fall. I doubt very much your assertion that the airline execs would use the money to buyback stock. They have much more urgent issues such as loans, leases and other overhead issues. Your information is false.

Additionally: the travel industry cruise ships, hotels, amusement parks bars and some restaurants have no customers. How are these employees to survive this “quarantine”?, without outside help from somewhere. In this case the treasury of the United States. I suppose you have a better solution – let's hear it.

The whole thing about this Covid -19 pandemic is the workers. They need immediate help. If you think I authored a “sob” story then O.K. It is the workers and those on the low end of the pay scale that needs the most help and the ones I have the most sympathy for.

I say again shame on Democrats for delaying the needed legislation. And shame on Speaker Pelosi horning in after taking the weekend off and submitting her bill of over 1,000 pages including items that had no bearing on the economy of the working class. I’ll take your apology anytime.

Your hatred for the President is quite evident. This is a disaster that could turn into a depression worse than that of 1929. Working people need help - the next few weeks are critical. When this is over these people will need a small business or a large corporation to go back to.
SA March 26, 2020, 7:20 pm I want to offer some further clarification on the hydroxychloroquine issue. I take this drug twice a day for rheumatoid arthritis, and it is a very safe drug. I do have to have an extensive eye exam once a year because of a potential side effect, but that has caused me no problems. The couple in Florida poisoned themselves by ingesting NOT hydroxychloroquine (that's a handful to type!) but instead chloroquine sulfate, a cleaning agent. Their tragic mistake defies logical explanation. Full disclosure - there are two or three people around Vinton who know that I have absolutely no love whatsoever for this president, however, he does NOT deserve to blamed for this incident. He suggested the use of a safe drug, and that is all. Honestly, I hope the clinical trials for hydroxychloroquine show promise, because I want this nightmare to be over. And if this drug DOES prove effective against the virus, rest assured I'll be hiding my supply of it very carefully under my 200 packages of toilet paper.
