RAYMOND: John A. Freese, 58, died Monday, June 17, 2013 at Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo, following a courageous battle with Cancer.
A Mass Of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 21, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville with Father Lloyd Reuter as Celebrant. Interment will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery in Raymond. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel- 212 E. 6th St., in Vinton, where a Rosary will be held at 3:45. In lieu of flowers memorials may to given to the John Freese Memorial Fund.
John was born January 31, 1955 in Marshalltown to Bernard and Juanetia (Eatinger) Freese. Following graduation from high school he graduated from Hawkeye College with an Associate Degree in Animal Science. He later graduated from the Oklahoma Farrier School.
On September 12, 1981 he was united in marriage to Theresa Gerholdt in Waterloo.
John served as a Judge for the Iowa High School Rodeo and was inducted into the Iowa High School Rodeo Hall of Fame. He was a lifetime member of the Black Hawk Creek Saddle Club. John had served as Chief of the Raymond Fire Dept, on the Black Hawk 4-H Committee and as a 4-H leader. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Raymond and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. John raised miniature cattle and quarter horses and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa of Raymond; his sons, Jonathan (Samantha) Freese of Phenix City, AL, Justin Freese of Raymond, and Jacob (Amanda) Freese of Waterloo; his granddaughter, Emma Freese and grandson Clayton; his father, Bernard Freese of Vinton; and his siblings, Brenda Hackbarth of Vinton, Dan (Brenda McGurk) Freese of Walford, Laura (Eric) Morine of Lamont, Bernard (Sue) Freese Jr. of Naperville, IL ; his brother-in-law, Bob Hanisch of Northfield, MN; his sister-in-law, Deanna Freese-Miller of Norway, many nieces, nephews and the Gerholdt family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Juanetia Freese; his sisters, Carol Hanisch, and Nancy Freese; and his brother, Tom Freese.
