December 12, 1946 – April 6, 2026.

Rick Powell, 79, of Atkins, Iowa, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on December 12, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Lovingly referred to as Dad, Pa and Ricky whose smile lit up the room.

Rick proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War as a member of the Naval Construction Battalion - the legendary Seabees. Known for their motto "We Build, We Fight," the Seabees embodied the same determination and pride that Rick carried throughout his life. He received an honorable discharge, and his service to his country remained a source of great pride for him and his family. He was a devoted member of the Atkins American Legion Post, where he stayed connected to his fellow veterans and continued his spirit of service long after his military years.

Rick was a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist. He spent the majority of his career with Universal Engineering and Rockwell Goss. He was a proud union member of local 831.

Beyond his service, Rick and Dorothy often hosted card club, Atkins Watermelon Days and barbecuing parties-charcoal only. Their home was always a gathering place, as their door was always open, filled with music and laughter. He loved the time he spent in Waukon, Iowa hunting and fishing with friends and family. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling, Yellowstone was one of their favorite trips. He was an avid sports fan and had a genuine thirst for learning, especially when it came to history. Above all, Rick treasured the time he spent with his family and those moments were what he cherished most.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rick is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy (Brandt), his children: Scott (Tanya) Powell, Tracey (Mark) Saunders, Brad (Gin) Ernster, Carrie Ernster, and Coral Almquist. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren who will forever carry on his legacy. He is also survived by his brother, Mike (Peg) Powell and his sister Barb (Al) Kriegel.

A celebration of life will be held to honor him later this summer.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Iowa City VAMC (636A8).
