After a courageous battle with numerous health challenges, Barbara Ann Semelroth, 84, passed away on January 18, 2026, at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Graveside services will be held on March 28 at Cedar Memorial. Teahen Funeral Home is assisting Barb’s family.
Barb was born on February 10, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Melvin and Maxine (Johnson) Semelroth. She graduated from Atkins High School in 1960, where the quotation beneath her yearbook photo proved fitting throughout her life: “She says little, but that doesn’t mean she has little to say.”
Barb devoted herself to caring for her father in his later years. Together, they made a life in Shueyville, where they tended a large garden, raised a variety of animals, and lovingly cared for many dogs. Her favorite companion, Buffy, later moved with her to Iowa City after her father’s passing.
She took great pride in her cherished role as “Aunt Barb” to Greg, Wendy, Jeff, Chris, Dawn, Tim, Tony, Ted, Trina, and Tiffany. She delighted in spoiling her nieces and nephews—especially at Christmas—with an abundance of homemade treats. They were also frequent recipients of her thoughtful finds from craft shows and thrift stores.
Barb enjoyed country music, Hallmark movies, and crocheting. Her cooking was appreciated by many, particularly her co-workers at Sheller Globe and her dear friends Brenda, Lee, Lanny, Sue, and Santos.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin Sr. and Maxine, and her brother, Melvin Jr. She is survived by her brother, Dick (Pat) Semelroth; sister-in-law Jean Semelroth; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-grand-nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Boyson Heights, Iowa City Hospice, and Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for their compassionate and comforting care over the past year.
