Lawrence Noe 85, of Independence, IA, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Lexington Estates in Independence, IA. Lawrence was born on November 20, 1938, the son of Elbertus and Manta "Cathryne" (Blough) Noe. Lawrence grew up helping out on the family farm between La Porte City and Brandon. Lawrence graduated from Laporte City High School in 1956. After graduation, he continued to farm with his father until he bought his own. He was then deployed in the Army from Feb 1962 - Nov 1963 as an artillery crew member and was a distinguished sharpshooter until returning to the farm.On November 14, 1964, Lawrence married Phyllis M Hepker Johnson. They raised their five children on their farms in Independence, Brandon, and Rowley.Lawrence loved life on the farm and raised a wide variety of livestock and crops throughout his lifetime. Even after retirement in 1996 he continued to regularly help out his son on the farm. Every planting and harvest season you could find him on a tractor or combine. Good luck to anyone who tried to stop him.In his retirement, he enjoyed many years of woodworking, gardening, and spending time with his family and grandkids. Many fond memories were made with the grandkids on outings to Backbone State Park. He spent hours gardening and shared the excess with family, friends, and local churches, nursing homes, and food pantries. He also enjoyed tending to and watching birds in his backyard.He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Phyllis Noe, Independence, Iowa, a son, Larry & Wendy Noe, Rowley, Iowa, three daughters: Larina & Robert Blad, Ankeny, Iowa, Annette & Lynndon Mumaw, Osceola, Iowa, Teresa (Johnson Youngblut) & Don Forney, Oelwein, Iowa, fourteen grandchildren: Carlee Noe, Case Noe, Alissa Blad, Jared Blad, Kylee Blad, Quintin Blad, Kevyn Mumaw, Codi Mumaw, Meggan Hostetler, Lindsey Mumaw, Lauren Mumaw, Ellie Mumaw, Heather McCann-Young, Eric Youngblut, two great-grandchildren, Keira Mumaw, Lane Mumaw, a sister, Donna Weltzin, brothers, John and Bruce Noe, sister-in-law, Sharon Noe, and many nieces and nephews.Lawrence is preceded in death by his parents, Elbertus and Manta "Cathryne" Noe, a son, Thomas A Johnson, a son-in-law, Michael Youngblut, two grandsons" Brian Youngblut and Tyler Mumaw, a brother, Arnold Noe, five sisters, Eleanor Vogt, Marvel Fulton, Wanda Noe, Dorothy Van Ree, and Bonnie Noe, and his father and mother-in-law, Clifford and Lela Hepker.A funeral service will be held at 3 PM on Friday, July 19, 2024, at the Reiff Family Center - Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. Visitation will be held after the service until 7 PM at the funeral home.
