James Michael "Barry" Adams, 82, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at his residence following a sudden illness. A memorial service with full military rites will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 3, 2023, at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home in Vinton, with Pastor Phil Borleske officiating. Visitation will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 2, at the funeral home.

Barry, born on September 29, 1941, in Farmington, was the son of Benham and Clarice (Gardner) Adams. He graduated fromBurlington High School, attended Iowa Wesleyan, and received a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling/Counselor from the University of Iowa (1964-1974). As a young man, Barry served as a Ground Observation Corps Volunteer in the Civil Air Patrol. On April 20, 1968, Barry was united in marriage to Lois Holeton in Cedar Rapids.

Barry proudly served in the United States Army, stationed in Japan for two years, where he studied the Russian language. Throughout his career, he dedicated himself to mental health advocacy in both Benton County and Iowa County, concluding as a Mental Health Advocate. Barry held various roles, including Commander and Treasurer of the American Legion George G. Luckey Post 57. He was also actively involved with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), contributing to their mission.

Music was a passion for Barry, and he expressed this love through his talent on the tuba. He played with several local community bands and was a cherished member of the Billy K. Murray Band. Barry also enjoyed spending time outside on his acreage, fishing, camping, playing chess, playing cards, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Barry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois; son, BJ (Tonya) Adams; grandchildren: Zachary and Madeline Adams; brother, Bob (Judy) Adams; and niece, nephews, and their families.

Preceding Barry in death were his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Jerry Derksen; and brother, Dick Adams.

A memorial fund has been established.
