Surrounded by family, Theron D. Gordon, known to most as "Gordy", of Newhall, died Thursday, August 10, 2023 at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 16 at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home in Vinton with Pastor Brian Channel officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Burial with full military rites will be in the Garrison Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at Wesley United Methodist Church, Vinton.

Gordy was born February 21, 1934, the son of Cassius and Susie (Arthur) Gordon. He grew up in Garrison, graduated from Garrison High School, and lived in Benton County most of his life. Gordy proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1952-1955. On March 2, 1957, Gordy was united in marriage to Bernice Hey. Bernice preceded him in death on October 19, 2017. He was employed by Midland Forge for 39 years as a Tool and Die Maker and foreman. He retired in 1996.

Gordy found joy spending time outdoors and was a lifelong hunter, fisherman and animal lover. He spent most of his time tinkering on motors in the garage or at his cabin on the river with family & friends. In his younger years, he was active in his community in the Newhall Jaycees, American Legion and Boy Scouts. Gordy also loved sales and auctions. He was an avid gun and coin collector and accumulated kerosene lamps, Budweiser steins and many other collections throughout the years. He also owned and refurbished dozens of antique outboard motors. He was the handiest of handymen.

Gordy valued hard work and honesty. He was very smart and loved learning, although he never formally attended college. His children and grandchildren remember him as a kind and loving man with a wonderful, corny sense of humor. Left to cherish Gordy's memory are his daughter, Anita Gordon; his son, Steve Gordon (Mary Barkdoll); grandchildren: Andrew Patterson (Wendy), Lindsay Glynn, Danielle Wells (Parker), Jayme Gordon (Cass Miller) and Nicholas Gordon (Michaela Spurlin); as well as ten beautiful great-grandchildren. He was well-loved and will be greatly missed.

A memorial fund has been established.
