Verne Harold McClurg, of Dothan, AL, passed away Monday, September 16, 2019 at Hartford Healthcare in Hartford, AL following an extended illness. He was 83 years old.

Mr. McClurg, a retired educator and higher education administrator, was born on his grandparent's farm several miles northeast of Belle Plaine, IA to the late Harold LeVerne McClurg and Evelyn Raabe McClurg on July 17, 1936. His father delivered Verne while waiting for the 78-year old country doctor to arrive. Verne and his younger brother and sister were raised in Belle Plaine, IA and Vinton, IA where he graduated from high school in 1954. Verne joined the Marine Corps after high school. After his military service, Verne earned his B.A. degree from Northern Arizona University (Police Science and Administration), his M.A. From Washington State University (Police Science and Administration), and his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska (Public Administration). During his lifetime, Verne was a Campus Police Officer (Flagstaff, AZ), Deputy Sheriff (Flagstaff, AZ), Director of Campus Security (University of Nebraska at Omaha, NE), Professor (University of Nebraska at Omaha, NE; Auburn University at Montgomery, AL; and Front Range Community College in Fort Collins, CO), and University Department Head (Auburn University at Montgomery, AL). After his retirement, Verne and his wife lived in Lincoln NE, Fort Collins CO, and Dothan AL. Verne loved cowboys and the west, golfing, and Husker football.

Verne is preceded in death by his parents and a brother. Survivors include his wife, Darlene McClurg, of Dothan, AL; two daughters and a son-in-law, Robin McClurg-George (Steven) of Boulder, CO and Barbara McClurg Harden of Dothan; a sister and brother-in-law, Marcia Delp (Phil) of Arlington, TX; and a sister-in-law, Naomi McClurg of South Dakota. In addition, two grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and special friends also survive.

I graduated with Vern in the class of 1954 in Vinton. He was such a fun person and had a great personality. I played drums and Vern the tuba in band. Condolences to you.
