Rex Lee Shepherd, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 20, 2019 at his Vinton home.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 25, 2019 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton, with Pastor Matt Magee officiating. Military rites will be held at Veterans Memorial Park in Vinton following the memorial service, conducted by the Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post # 57 and Iowa Military Honors. Visitation will be held from 10 AM until service time at the funeral home on Saturday.

Rex was born on November 14, 1929 in Boswell, IN to John B. and Berniece (Goodwine) Shepherd. Rex graduated from Ball State University in Muncie, IN in 1950 with B.A. in Library Science. He served his country in the United States Army from 1951 until his discharge in 1953. He received his master’s degree from Indiana University in 1958. On March 8, 1953, he was united in marriage to Jacqueline Vitatoe at Ft. Riley, KS. Rex served as the Washington High School librarian from 1969 until retiring in 1991. Rex, Jackie and their family moved to Vinton in 1976. Jackie preceded Rex in death in 2006. He was a member of the First Christian Church, serving as board chairman. He also enjoyed membership in the Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 where he served as finance officer, the AMVETS Post #218, where he served as treasurer and the Vinton Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his children, John (Donna) Shepherd, Robert (Becky) Shepherd, Glen (Corinne) Shepherd, Scott Shepherd, Debbie Shepherd, and Tammie Jo Badarak; his son-in-law Timothy Wolf; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Donald (Gloria) Shepherd

In addition to his wife Jackie, Rex was preceded in death by his daughter Denise; and 5 brothers, Harry, Harold, Leonard, Charles and Dean.
