Estella Kathryn Harrington was born March 9, 1918, in Dysart, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Krug) Barta. She was raised and attended schools in Dysart graduating with the Class of 1935. Following graduation, Stella was employed at two restaurants in Dysart, Bob White Café and the Stanley Watt Busy Bee Cafe and later at Van Tassel Locker and Market for 15 years. In 1961, she took employment at Farmer's Coop Telephone Company as a Bookkeeper retiring from there in 1975. Stella married Ellis Harrington on August 9, 1939 in her parents' home which was built by her father. While her husband was serving overseas in the Army, she cared for her father during his terminal illness. Being caring people, she and Ellis later cared for both of their mothers as well as a close neighbor. Stella joined the American Legion Auxiliary in 1946 after Ellis' honorable discharge, serving in most offices and as the pianist for 60 years. She was also a member of the Auxiliary Past President Parley. Having lived through the Depression era, Stella and Ellis enjoyed working together to live off the land and had a large garden. They would can the produce they grew and contentedly work together in the evenings shelling walnuts as they listened to music on the radio. Stella was a lifetime member of the Dysart United Methodist Church (formerly First Evangelical). Stella passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Sunnycrest Nursing Center in Dysart, at the age of 100 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ellis, on December 10, 2005; her brother, Clifford Barta; and her sister, Florence Hackett. Stella is survived by 3 nephews: Mark (Jane) Harrington of St. Louis, MO, Paul (Margaret) Harrington of Rosemount, MN, and Jerry Barta of New Hampton, Iowa; 5 great-nieces and nephews: Jason (Tammy) Barta, Laura (Adam) Bleakney, Mat (Stephanie Morris) Harrington, Annika (Jedd) Larson, Becca (Rory) Groves; 13 great-great nieces and nephews: Claire, Simon, Nellie, Mara, Sonna, Svea, Ivar, Elsie, Hattie, Alden, Matthew, Carter & Graham; 2 step great-great nieces: Kayleigh & Ashleigh; and 1 step great-great-nephew, Zach. Memorials may be directed to the family to be distributed among those organizations nearest and dearest to Stella's heart.
