SHELLSBURG: Oliver Conrad Schminke, age 90, died Friday, March 23, 2018 at Unity Point Hospice in Cedar Rapids.
Private family graveside services with military rites will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Mount Pleasant Cemetery rural Shellsburg with Rev. Phil Borleske officiating.
Oliver was born on June 25, 1927 near Newhall, the son of Edmund and Jessie (Tyler) Schminke. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton with the class of 1944. Oliver farmed with this brother Marion following high school and served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On July 19, 1964, he was united in marriage to Ingeborg Gertrude Klug at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton. He was a talented inventor and machinery designer and also worked as a realtor and insurance agent for many years. He became a professional travel guide with his wife Inge at Villa Comagena. Oliver traveled to Europe 69 times through the years. He served as the Sunday School superintendent at Zion Lutheran Church in Shellsburg and loved to fish in Canada.
He is survived by his wife Inge of Shellsburg; his children, Erick (Tracy) Schminke of Madrid, IA, Kyle (Kyla) Schminke of Shellsburg and Heidi (Mike Kerby) Schminke of Vinton; his grandchildren, Drew Pearson, Dawne Holten and Sarah Schminke; his sisters Ida Mae Tompkin of St. Louis, MO. and Doris Boyer of Shellsburg and his brother Marion (Jeannine) Schminke of Shellsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers-in-law, Ralph Tompkin and Dean Boyer.
