Ione Mehlert Murdock   MT. AUBURN - Ione Margaret Mehlert Murdock, 83, formerly of Mt. Auburn, died peacefully Sunday, February 25, 2018, at Living Center East in Cedar Rapids of natural causes. A memorial visitation and celebration of Ione's life will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018, at the American Legion Post 177 in Mt. Auburn. Ione Margaret Poole was born November 9, 1934, in Harlan, Iowa, the daughter of Grant and Lotus Plumb Poole. Her parents moved to Cedar Rapids where Ione graduated from Franklin High School. She then attended Simpson College. On September 10, 1955, she married Willie Mehlert at the Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church. The couple lived in Mt. Auburn. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1983. She married Carl Murdock in January of 1989 in Tucson, Arizona. He preceded her in death on June 28, 2014. Ione was trained as a secretary and office manager. She worked for several businesses in her career including Dairy Queen, Me-Jon Fertilizer, the Iowa Braille School and the Mt. Auburn Savings Bank. She was also one of the first three First Responders for the Mt. Auburn area. She was an active church member everywhere she lived. Ione enjoyed studying family genealogy, and she was a prolific writer. She is survived by her sons, Marty Mehlert of Kalona and Tom (Brenda) Mehlert of Phoenix, AZ; three grandchildren, Shawn Mehlert, Jennifer (Pat) Ambrose and Isabelle (Enrique) Lopez; five great-grandchildren, Alyson, Frances, Micah, Molly and Conor; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; sister, Ruth Mehlert; and great- granddaughter, Natalie. A memorial fund has been established.
