Obituaries : Zola Charlene (Sanders) Cerny

Zola Sanders Cerny, 95, of Sunnyvale, Calif., formerly of Vinton, died Friday, June 23, 2017. A brief memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, at Phillips Family Center, 605 Second Ave., Vinton, with the Rev. Phil Borleske officiating. The family will greet friends from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Zola was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Lucille Cantonwine Sanders; her special friend and companion, Bernard "Barney" Price; and Pat Neahaus Flaherty, who started rooming with her in Cedar Rapids in 1942. Surviving are first cousins, Cheryl Cantonwine Kelley, Raymond Cantonwine and Susan White. Zola was blessed to have been Grandma Zola to Barney's grandchildren and Steve Greenfield's daughters. Zola was a godmother to Steve and Dennis Flaherty. She leaves many close friends including Mary Oxley, with whom she grew up; Marcella Stallman and Dave Neahaus; and Maureen Flaherty, a faithful and cherished friend.
