Mt. Auburn - Linus V. Winter, 84, of Marion, formerly Mt. Auburn, died Sunday, October 23, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center Hallmar. Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 27, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Vinton, with Fr. Ardel Barta as celebrant. Memorial visitation at church from 10:00 a.m. to mass time on Thursday. Burial at a later date. Linus was born May 25, 1932, in Waucoma, Iowa, the son of Louis J. and Johanna Balk Winter. He attended country school in Waucoma, St. Mary's School and Waucoma High School. He also spent four years at the Chicago School of Technology. Linus proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War (1953 to 1955). Linus owned and operated a 50 cow dairy farm from 1957 until 1960. He also worked in a factory in Charles City; for Oliver in Fairbanks and Morris, Wisconsin; and for John Deere in Waterloo. He worked for the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton as a facility supervisor for 30 years, retiring September 1, 1999. On June 8, 1957, Linus was united in marriage with Doris L. Burkhart at St. Mary Catholic Church in Vinton. Linus was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Vinton. He taught CCD, was a Lector, Board member and served as Treasurer. Linus was a member of the Mt. Auburn American Legion. He was a past President and District Governor for the Lions Club; and was a Board member of Vinton Unlimited. Linus is survived by his wife, Doris, children: Denise (Michael) Holmes Marion; Barbara (Daniel) Higdon of Vinton; Michael (Margaret) Winter of Cedar Rapids; and Mark (Molly) Winter of Minnetonka,MN; one sister, Dorothy Holthaus of Cresco; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters and four brothers. Memorials will be directed to the Vinton Lions Club and the Mt. Auburn Legion.
