ATKINS: Eda Barbara Schanbacher, 98, of Solon, and formerly of Atkins, died Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at Windmill Manor in Tiffin following an extended illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 24, 2016at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins with Rev. Douglas Woltemath officiating. Interment will be held at St. Stephen's Cemetery near Atkins. Visitation will also be held at the church. Friends may register from 5 to 7 p.m., on Friday.. A memorial fund has been established for St. Stephen's Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
Eda was born December 17, 1917 at Atkins to George W. and Anna (Gerhold) Rinderknecht and graduated from the Atkins High School in 1934. .
On September 14, 1940 she was united in marriage to Wilbert "Bill" Schanbacher at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins. The couple farmed in Linn County until 1973 when they moved to Solon. Wilbert preceded Eda in death on October 3, 2002.
While living in Atkins, Eda was a member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church where she served as Past President of the Ladies Society, taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Christian Couples Club. She was also a member of the Atkins Women's Club.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Schanbacher of Iowa City and Patricia (Ivan) Lauck of West Bend; her son John (Eileen) Schanbacher of Atkins; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers; and four sisters.
Eda's family wants to thank the staff at Meadowview in Cedar Rapids and Windmill Manor in Tiffin for their compassionate care of her these past four years.
