VINTON:     Bernice Appleby, 100, died Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended illness.

     Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 19, 2015 at the Presbyterian Church in Vinton with Rev. Jessica Crane-Munoz officiating.  Interment will be held at the Urbana Cemetery.  Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.  A memorial fund has been established for the Vinton Presbyterian Church and the Vinton Lutheran Home.

     Bernice was born November 13, 1915 in rural Vinton to Jess and Mae (Garwood) Johnson.  On July 26, 1940 she was united in marriage to Harold “Happy” Appleby at the Prairie Creek Church North of Vinton.  He preceded her in death on July 18, 2004.

     The couple farmed in the Lynnville, Urbana and Vinton areas before moving to Vinton in 1978.  Bernice worked as a cook for HACAP for almost 10 years prior to her retirement.  She was a member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church, and was well-known for her pie making skills.

     She is survived by her children, Kathleen (Larry) Kemp of Indianapolis, IN, Kirk (Carilyn) Appleby of Vinton; six grandchildren, Kevin (Amy) Kemp, Dusty (Jody) Kemp, Clayton (Melinda) Kemp, Jay (Kecia) Appleby, Jayma Appleby and Jeanne Appleby; six, great-grandchildren, Jayson, Rexton and Lucas Kemp and Kaylie, Kelcie and Kendalyn Appleby.

     In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ross and Loren Johnson.
