LaVerne C. Welch, 72, a resident of New Liberty, Iowa, passed away Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, at University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, surrounded by his family. In keeping with his wishes, the rite of cremation has been accorded.
Please join us for a celebration of LaVerne’s love for life, football and family, on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Dixon Legion Hall, Dixon, Iowa. We will have the Iowa vs. Iowa State football game on in his honor. Come and tailgate with us, play a game of poker, enjoy the tailgate food and stay ‘til the final whistle blows.
LaVerne Clark Welch was born on Sept. 20, 1942, in Vinton, Iowa, a son of Lloyd and Alice (Butler) Welch. He was united in marriage to Jeanne Woodson Aug. 10, 1963. LaVerne was a carpenter by trade and worked 17 years at Caterpillar prior to opening his own business, J and L Cabinetry, in New Liberty in 1986. He closed the business due to health reasons in 2014.
LaVerne loved his family dearly and never missed watching their many ballgames. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football fan and enjoyed a good game of poker, playing with the same group of friends since 1975.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 52 years, Jeanne; and their children and spouses, Kimberly (Mark) Daily, Steven (Shelley) Welch; five grandchildren, Andrew (Nicki), Joshua (Kimberly), Jacob, Cassandra and Alician; three great-grandchildren, Natalie, Brynn and Wyatt; two brothers, Jon (Addie) Welch, Minnesota, and David (Sue) Welch, Texas; as well as numerous loving extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

His family lived next door to us when I was in 8th grade. Goodness, that was a long time ago! But good times. My prayers and condolences go out to all his family.
