BLAIRSTOWN: Dean R. Nieland, 87 of Blairstown died Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following a sudden illness. Private family funeral services will be held. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blairstown at a later date. Phillips Funeral Home in Blairstown is in charge of arrangements.
Dean was born July 20, 1926 the son of Lawrence Verna (Athey) Nieland at Blairstown. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Lewis on June 25, 1949 at the Blairstown Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Marjorie of Blairstown; his sons, Robert (Sheryl) Nieland of Shellsburg and Michel (Patricia) Nieland of Belle Plaine; his daughter, Carol (Kelly) Nugent of Amana; his grandchildren, Amber Tilley, Andrea Highberger, Rhiannon Nugent, Dylan Nugent, Mark Nieland and Tony Nieland; his great grandchildren, Lindsay and Makenzie Nieland and Ethan and Carli Highberger and Archer Nieland.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, Wendy Jo Schulze and sister, Marjorie Radeke and brother, Leo Nieland.
