VINTON – Don D. Burmeister, 84, died Sunday, December 29, 2013, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton.
A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2013, at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vinton with Pastor Mark C. Urlaub officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church on Saturday. Inurnment will be in Dysart Cemetery, Dysart, Iowa.
Don was born September 4, 1929, in Elberon, Iowa, the son of Henry and Minnie Selk Burmeister. He attended country school in Dysart.
On January 20, 1948, Don was united in marriage with Helen Madera at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Don farmed for 25 years. For the next 25 years, he owned D & H Trucking and logged over 1 million accident-free miles hauling refrigerated goods throughout the United States. He retired in 1992.
He was a member of Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vinton for 50+ years. He enjoyed fishing and spending time in their mobile home in Minnesota. He also enjoyed playing cards and wintering in Texas and Arizona.
Don is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Burmeister, of Vinton; one son, Gary (Dana) Burmeister of Mt. Auburn; two daughters: Donna (Dick) Kruckenberg of Vinton and Linda (Craig) Anderson of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Evelyn Greenwood of Vinton; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Melvin Burmeister in infancy and Keith Burmeister; one sister, Arlene Forrest; and one great-grandson, Jacob, in infancy.
A memorial fund has been established.

tf January 3, 2014, 8:41 pm I first met don around 22 years ago,,,we both had trucks leased to wcx out of des moines iowa..we were in house carriers for Wilson foods,,don had 6or 7 trucks there and I was a 26 year old startin out..maybe I had 3 trucks at the time..me and don would visit when we met up..he was full of knowledge and experience...I was just young and unstoppable...don called me in Missouri one day...he was in a little bind..a driver had quit him under a load goin to new Orleans...I believe don ran that load weekly...he wanted me to drive the truck and deliver the load...I caught a ride to Bettendorf iowa and met don...he said ted ,ill do two things. you drive the truck and deliver the loads and I will pay you,,,or you take the truck and trailer and deliver the loads and if you want to keep the money that the loads pays you can and I will just sell you the truck and trailer...and pay me what you can,,,when you can...it was a nice brown kenworth w 900a model.it came from vitalis out of desmoines iowa,,I believe one of dons best driver died in the drivers seat leaving the house one morning...it was a beautiful truck. I still own the truck but its retired now,,,i start and drive it often..of course I paid don and he gave me a fair price and no interest...I called him often to say hello but years go past quick...I have stage four lung cancer and my days are short..i was thinkin back tonight and thought I needed to call don. Well I googled his name and seen he passed...oh how I wish I would have called months ago...I always think of don and how he trusted a young man..who lived 500 miles away...don was a mans man...goodbye old friend..ill find you on the other side...im buyin the coffee....ted frauenhoffer...marshall mo
