Benton County Emergency Management Agency Director Scott Hansen said that it is likely that when the Cedar River level in Vinton reaches 19.5 to 20 feet, the Iowa DOT is likely to close the Highway 150 bridge that leads into Vinton from the north.

There is a storm drain that at 19.5 to 20 feet will begin to back up and flood First Avenue south of the bridge. That, said Hansen, would be the reason for closing the bridge.

During a meeting with county and city officials, Hansen said that the river is expected to reach the 19.6-19.8 level between 3-4 a.m. Saturday. That, he said is the most likely time for the closure of the bridge. The decision on when and if to close the bridge is up to the DOT, said Hansen.

DL May 31, 2013, 5:18 pm Has anybody considered that one of the reasons the water wants to flood south into town so much more now is that it\'s been displaced by \"dirt mountain\" in what used to be the flood plain, just to the northeast of the bridge?? Has no one but my family noticed this?
JS June 1, 2013, 7:25 am I\'ve notice and thought that too. If anything it should be dugged deaper instead of made higher so the water would have a place to go.
