Vinton-Shellsburg football players added a touch of pink to their black and gold uniforms Friday as they honored breast cancer survivors during their game.

Honorary captains included three relatives of Viking team captains, all of whom are breast cancer survivors.

Donna Merchant, the grandmother of Viking Chris Merchant; Kris Ferguson, the mother of Viking Josh Ferguson, and Audra Hootman, the mother of Viking Tanner Spies walked with the team captains to midfield for the coin toss, as the announcer honored Vinton’s breast cancer survivors. The players wore pink socks and wristbands during Friday’s game.

Sixth-ranked Williamsburg defeated the Vikings, 58-12. The regular season ends next Friday, when the Vikings host Crestwood.

Alumni Football presentation

Vinton-Shellsburg Alumni Football USA team members and captain Randy Scheel presented profits from this year’s game to VS coaches before the varsity game. The current players helped sell tickets for the alumni game, which included players from the Class of 1976 through the Class of 12. The event raised $1,200. The football program received $800, the cheerleaders $200 and the Vinton Community Band also received $200. The 2013 Alumni game is planned for the first or second week in June, and the expected opponent is Benton Community.
