Vinton Today readers who pay attention to the news from the AmeriCorps campus at the Iowa Braille School may have noticed that along with news about Class 18 members and teams, there is now information about Class 19.
That’s because the expansion of the NCCC campus from 240 to 400 members is now in progress.
It’s called FEMA-Corps.
The new teams will all be trained, and led, by NCCC staff members and team leaders, as the other NCCC teams are.
But the FEMA-Corps teams will only work in federally-declared disaster areas.
In addition to providing assistance to people affected by floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes or other natural disasters, the program has the goal of developing young leaders with experience and traniing in handling disasters.
The FEMACorps team leaders have been training in Vinton for the past few weeks, and recently went on their first project together. The FEMACorps members will arrive to begin their training later this month.
