John and Jill Gualtier went to the Jefferson Awards event where John was honored for his thousands of hours of service to area veterans and area students.
They came back even more inspired to do more for their community.
"It was the trip of a lifetiime," said Jill. "I was proud to see my husband being honored. You don't volunteer for the accolades, but it's nice to see that people notice what you do."
John was one of scores of Americans who was honored for volunteering during the annual Jefferson Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., on June 20.
He was honored for spending several thousands of hours helping veterans at Iowa VA facilities, as well as sharing his story as a WWII medic who helpe liberate some concentration camps with area high school students.
In spite of all of the hours John has spent as a volunteer, the Jefferson Awards experience motivates the Gualtiers to do even more.
"You can't go there without wanting to do more for your community," says Jill.
Dozens of Americans from many states were chosen as the honorees of media partners -- picked by television stations or newspapers. Gualtier was chosen by KCRG-TV through its annual Nine who Care program.
There were also several well-known national recipients;everal dozen youth were honored for their volunteer efforts in their communities.Gen. David Petraeus, football player Jim Kelly and Indy Racing League driver Charlie Kimball were among the National Recipients.
The Gualtiers found the teenagers to be particularly inspiring. John said that seeing all of those high school students all dressed up, and hearing about their accomplishments gave him more hope for America's future.
After their event, the Gualtiers returned to the Eastern Iowa Airport, where a handful of area veterans were waiting to welcome them home.
