Vince Blank, the former Navy man, World War II and Korea veteran, long time veterans organization leader and even former Mayor of Vinton, has added his personal touch to the Veterans Park area.

The Blank family donated an anchor from a Navy ship; it is now part of the Veterans Park area. Blank's widow, Nancy, cut the ribbon for the new area on Monday, after the annual Memorial Day ceremony.

VPRD Diretor Duane Randall thanked the family members for their generous donation and praised Alan Merchant and the AmeriCorps team that built the memorial area, which also includes two benches.

KVS May 30, 2012, 1:55 pm Frank, an Army veteran, and I attended the ceremony on Monday and remember Vince well. Vince dedicated a LOT of time and energy to the City of Vinton as our first city coordinator as well as mayor, in addition to many committees and behind-the-scenes activities. Vince, along with Frank\'s Dad, Ray,( a WW II nose-gunner in Italy and North Africa campaigns) and mother, Helen, were among the many role models for us (as newly moved to Vinton) in learning how this town operates. We thought the ceremony on Memorial Day, and the commemoration of Vince\'s life with this new, handsomely designed space by Alan Merchant, constructed by our Americorps volunteers, was most fitting in honoring Vince\'s legacy, and thank them all, along with Duane Randall and the Blank family for inspiring the next generation by their action, to future action.
