News Supervisor Candidate Profile: Terry Hertle

Editor's Note: Vinton Today has asked all eight candidates for Benton County Supervisor to share in their own words their lifetime of experience as well as their vision for the future.

Long-time Democratic activist Terry Hertle is running for the District 2 seat as a Democrat. Below, Terry describes his experience and vision:

I am a lifelong rural area farmer and farmland owner in Benton County.  I have been married for forty-seven years to my wife, Judi, and we have two grown children and two granddaughters.  We live on the family century farm located on 27th Avenue between Vinton and Newhall.

I have been active all my life in community, civic and church organizations.  I was a past member of the corn, soybean, cattle and pork producers associations.  Also the Lion’s Club, Farm Bureau, Iowa Farmer’s Union, WMT Farm Panel and served as president of the Benton County Extension council for three years where I was honored with “Friends of Iowa Extension” award by the state.  I also served as co-chairman of the Quasquicentennial celebration for Newhall, IA in 2007.  I have held past and present offices in St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall and am currently serving on the Benton County Community Foundation Board.

I believe there has been a good working relationship between county and city governments.  One that comes to mind is the county providing police protection that varies from town to town for their particular needs.

As a farmer I am always concerned about maintaining our roads and improving or replacing our bridges, especially our market to market infrastructure.

I am not without concerns for the county.  As a farmland owner, I am concerned about the environment, economic growth, and land use.  As a property owner, I am also concerned about taxes and the county budget.  I am fiscally conservative, and will be a good steward of the taxpayer’s money. I will listen and work hard for ALL the people in making common sense decisions.

I would like to see the quality of representation for our county to remain high, save money and work efficiently.
