Emma Miller, a second grader at Tilford Elementary School created the winning poster for the local “Money Smart Week” poster contest at Farmers Savings Bank & Trust. She won $100 to open a new savings account.
Emma and 39 other Tilford students submitted posters for “Money Smart Week,” which is a contest in the state of Iowa sponsored by the Community Bankers of Iowa – CBI, which Farmers Savings Bank is a member of. This campaign is to increase awareness and promote ways to be financially stable. Students in grades 2nd through 6th were encouraged to create a poster regarding the theme, “There’s a lot to learn about money. What should you know now?”
Now Emma’s poster and the others will be sent to CBI in West Des Moines to be judged. This means they will compete against other 2nd through 6th graders in the state of Iowa for a chance to win $200.
“Last year, a student from Traer won a $200 savings bond at the state level.” said Sue Hammond. We wanted to include Vinton Shellsburg students to give them a chance to compete at the state level. We expanded the contest to choose a winner locally.” Emma’s poster was very colorful and had a good message. “Learn about money. Spend it wisely.”
