     Stop, drop & roll.

     Your family's meeting place.

Use the back of your hand to see if a door is hot.

Crawl -- don't walk -- out of a room filled with smoke.

Vinton-Shellsburg kindergarten students received some of their basic fire safet lessons from several members of the Vinton Fire Department Tuesday afternoo. On Wednesday, there will be fire truck rides and tours of the fire station for several elementary classes.

The firemen told the students about proper use of the 911 emergency number, Operation EDITH (Exit Drills in the Home), and other lessons. They also gave them some educational items to help reinforce the lessons.

They showed the students how a firemen and his equipment would look and sound if the firemen needed to look for a child in a burning home. The men also gave the kids a chance to try on a fireman's coat, helmet and breathing mask.

In one class, the students were surprised to find that when the firemen took off his helmet and breathing mask, they were looking Rick Wood, the father of their classmate, Michael. Luke Henkle also made an appearance in the classroom of his daughter, Carmen.
