Vinton City Council Member Lisa Vermedahl hopes that someone from Vinton's Fourth Ward will decide to run for her spot on the council.

     After Thursday's meeting, Vermedahl was one of two council members to say they are definitely not running for re-election. Don Burkey, the at-large incumbent, announced during the meeting that he would not seek another term.

     The other council member whose four-year term is up us Ron Elwick of Ward 2. Elwick said after Thursday's meeting that he is undecided about seeking another term.

    Mayor John Watson runs every two years. He has taken out nominating petitions for another term.

    Council members who represent specific wards must live in that ward. At-large candidates can live anywhere within Vinton city limits. The council members meet the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Each also serves on a few three-member committees that meet occasionally to discuss changes to city ordinances and policies.

     Council members are paid $2,000 per year.

     Anyone interested in seeking any of these office is invited to visit VintonCity Hallto take out nomination papers. The deadline for filing nominating petitions is Sept. 22, for the Nov. 8 election. Iowalaw requires candidates to file petitions containing the signatures of eligible voters in the voting district. Nominating petitins for Vinton city elections require at least 25 signatures.
