Heavy rainfall moved through Benton County on Monday, June 8, dropping as much as 4.5 inches of rain in some areas and creating flooding concerns throughout the county.
The National Weather Service had Benton County under a Flood Watch as rainfall produced significant runoff. Low-lying areas and secondary roads were especially impacted.
Among the areas affected, the road connecting Highway 218 to Shellsburg was reported underwater, making travel hazardous. Roads within Rodgers Park also experienced flooding, with water covering portions of the roadway, 13th St. in Vinton was briefly underwater as well. All of the typical streets in town that have flooding issues were again underwater.
The heavy rain was part of a larger storm system affecting eastern Iowa. While rainfall amounts varied across the region, the locally heavy downpours quickly overwhelmed ditches, creeks, and drainage systems.
Alway use caution and avoid driving through flooded roadways, as conditions can change rapidly and water depth is often difficult to judge.
