At the last Vinton City Council meeting, the city approved the retirement of the Vinton Police Department's K-9 Officer, Gino. In December 2016, the German Shepherd, along with his partner Officer Ben Parmater, completed their training together in Indiana. Gino was Vinton's very first K-9 to serve with the department.
When the possibility of the program first came to the community's attention, Vinton rallied together to bring the dog to the Vinton Police Department. Through fundraising efforts, donations well over $20,000 provided enough to cover the expenses and costs associated with the new K-9 Unit. This covered the initial purchase and training of the dog, food, housing and other expenses. The first transport unit was also approved to carry the K-9.
Gino's training prepared him to protect the officers, suspect apprehension and drug detection. Over Gino's nine years career, he was instrumental in helping to detain two suspects and assisted with 55 narcotic detections in the area.
Gino's official service is now over. He was officially released from duty and will remain with Captain Parmater and his family.
Edo, the new K-9 will step into the new position and serve with Sergeant Smothers. Edo was introduced to the city council at their last meeting. (there are a few pictures of his excitement at meeting the council.)
