In May, the students in the Ag Exploration class at Vinton-Shellsburg High School completed a hands-on project by building wooden benches as part of their Power, Structural, Technical unit. This project was more than just a chance to work with wood; it gave students the opportunity to learn valuable life and career skills.
As part of the project, students were introduced and freshened up their skills with a variety of tools such as saws, drills, clamps, and measuring equipment. They learned how to safely operate these tools while creating benches with their own unique designs. The experience focused not only on technical skills but also emphasized teamwork, problem-solving, and planning.
One student, Violet Hainey, shared her excitement: "It was fun. I'm not in a woods class right now, so it was fun just to get back in the shop and make things."
In the end, all the students walked away with pride for their benches. They were able to purchase theirs or donate them to be used for seating at the Benton County Fair. This project not only made the students feel independent, but also taught them real world skills that they can use in their lives forever.
