AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) members immediately started cleanup at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School (IBSSS) on G Avenue after the severe storm Monday morning.

Nineteen teams of 8 piled all sorts of debris on the side of the road. Piles of brush were made to be chipped, piles of broken boards and trash were made to be dumped, and piles of copper from the IBSSS Main building were made to be scrapped.

The IBSSS serves as the North Central Region campus for AmeriCorps NCCC. During the storm, all summer campers at the IBSSS and NCCC members waited with bated breath in the tunnels under the campus. After the “all clear” was given, members promptly began cleaning up debris.

On Tuesday, July 12, NCCC members worked with many organizations in the Vinton community to clean up debris left over from the storm. Four NCCC teams worked with the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department to remove brush and debris from the parks.
