Tammy Fett and other Vinton hair stylists teamed up in a unique effort to raise money for the new Benton County Nature Center, raising $800 with an outdoor hair cutting event at Riverside Park.

For a donation of $10, clients could get a haircut. Many were already lined up at 11 a.m. when the event began. Kristen Redlinger joined Fett at the beginning of the event; stylists Matt Marovek and Jen Roster had also signed up to help later in the day.

The first customers included Emily Magnuson, who said she was motivated to attend by the savings. "Ten dollars is a good deal for a haircut," she said.

Another early customer was John Anderson, who said it was his first haircut outside.

Monday's storm damage delayed the presentation of the check to Julie Zimmer, one of the organizers of the effort to raise money for the Nature Center. Zimmer says she hopes Fett's project will inspire other fund-raisers and donations to the new facility. The Nature Center is located west of Rodgers Park, in a house purchased by the Benton County Conservation Board last year.
