Nancy Farmer looked with alarm at a generator burning gasoline next to an open window.

The Benton County Public Health Director said carbon monoxide poisoning is often one of the biggest health risks during power outages such as the one currently affecting Vinton residents and some people in Garrison.

“Never run a generator or any other portable gasoline-powered engine inside a basement, garage or other enclosed structure, or near any open door, window or vent,” said Farmer.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion. Anyone experiencing these should leave the area and seek medical help.

Power line danger

Benton County Emergency Management Director Scott Hansen said that every power line should be considered live; electrical service will not be restored to structures with damaged power connections until the service connection has been inspected and certified.

Tree debris

Residents are asked to leave tree debris near, but not on city streets. The city will pick up tree debris, but not household garbage or structural debris; those are the responsibility of the property owner.

City utilities

The city water is safe for use, but residents are asked to use good conservation practices.

General safety

Residents are reminded of these general safety precautions:

  • Be aware of the hazards of exposed nails and broken glass; weary sturdy boots or shoes, long sleeves and gloves.
  • Use battery-powered flashlights instead of candles, when possible.
  • Never taste food to determine its safety.
  • Do not refreeze food that has thawed completely, especially meat, poulty or seafood.
  • Thoroughly cook any food item saved from the refrigerato or refrozen to assure that any food-borne bacteria that may be present is destroyed.
  • Only drink water from proven safe sources.
  • Avoid contact with raw sewage.
  • Thoroughly wash hands and bare skin with soap and water after contact with standing water or debris.
