The Vinton Shellsburg High School Band was honored to be chosen to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Those representing the band by laying the wreath were Wes Lyons, John Levis, Nick Gardner and Ashley Mckenna. The wreath placed near the famous tombstone had Vinton-Shellsburg High School Band written on the ribbon. The band also watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Everything is great. Tonight (Sunday) we were on a fun dinner dance cruise on the Potomic. A summer thunderstorm came through quickly but we had no problems and were able to continue cruising once it passed--we continued eating and didn't notice the weather unless we looked out a window.

GG July 5, 2011, 2:02 am So wonderful to see my grandnephew and others of the band in tribute to the unknown soldier. So seldom we see people recognize the extreme sacrifices for our freedom.
SSCo\ July 5, 2011, 11:32 am Wow! That has to be one of the greatest feelings in the world. These kids will never forget the experience. Very impressive!!
July 5, 2011, 12:26 pm I think that the school and community should be very proud of the representatives we sent to Washington, D. C. to perform in the 4th of July parade. Not only to see the class representatives lay the wreath at the tomb of the unknown but to see Vinton Shellsburg High School on the ribbon of the wreath is a picture that needs so explanation and may never happen again in a lifetime. I also think that when you realize the logistics that went into this trip a big salute has to go to those involved in the planning and to the chaperones who made it all possible as well as the bus drivers who had to navigate the congestion on the busy and narrow streets of Washington, D. C. And of course one cannot forget the Band Director Mr. Smith who prepared the band to not only be accepted but to perform admirably. And Mr. Smith would be the first to tell you that one cannot forget the parents who have supported these students over the years.
