Our November Veteran of the Month is someone a lot of Benton County residents will likely recognize, Richard (Dick) Stallman!
Dick served in the US Army from 1978 to 1982, and then served one more additional year in the Iowa National Guard. He wanted to follow in the footsteps of his older brother who had already been to Vietnam. Dick believes that military service is important; it'll make a man (or woman) out of you.
His primary MOS was a Communications Specialist but while stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, he was assigned to a Military Police unit and afforded the opportunity to attend MP School as well, making that his secondary MOS.
Dick's most memorable military experience was being stationed in Germany from 1979 until 1981. He says it was, "more the Army over there"; battalion runs on paydays and the long-lasting friendships that were made. Dick also supremely enjoyed having the opportunity to travel all over Europe. He also immensely enjoyed his time at Fort Carson where he loved the mountains. He and four buddies would take a trail and hike halfway up Pike's Peak once a month.
Dick now resides outside of Norway with his wife, Ginger. They have two grown sons and the light of their life; a four month old granddaughter. As a familiar face we all love to see, he has worked as a courthouse security officer for almost 19 years. In his free time, Dick enjoys watching sports, boating, and spending time with his family.
Thank you for your service, Dick!
