It's never good if the cops show up at your door...unless you invited them over for a cup of coffee and a chat. That's what the Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab did on Wednesday. The Lori Smith organized the Coffee with a Cop with the Benton County Sheriff's Department who sent Deputy Dave Upah. Upah took some time out of his day to sit and talk with residents who live at the facility.

Upah visited with one of Vinton's oldest residents, Keith Elwick, 104 years of age who was entertained by the stories that were shared and told some of his own. Stories about "the good ol' days" were told by several residents at the table. Lee and Marlene Overton shared stories and a few jokes with Upah to the enjoyment of the group in attendance. There were discussions about how things used to be and the residents who have come and gone from the area. In return, Upah shared a little about his job and shared some of his stories from the job.

The facility brought out coffee or hot chocolate and pumpkin spice cupcakes for everyone to enjoy.

Coffee with a Cop started in Hawthorne, California in 2016 and is now a tradition carried out across the country. As an observer, it was a fun break in the routine just to listen to the conversations and watch the mutual admiration between residents and Deputy Upah.

A special thanks to the Benton County Sheriff's Department for making the day of these residents a little extra special!
