Jodie Bevans was a veteran who had served in the United States Air Force for more than six years. Following her military service, she became an LPN and served in the Solon Care Center, then became the Director of Nursing at Rock Ridge Care Center in Shellsburg, and later at Cottage Grove Place. Most importantly, she was a wife, mother and grandmother to 24 grandchildren. 

The world changed for her family on July 15, 2022, when she was murdered.

On August 4, 2022 Tacoa Talley, 38, of North Liberty, Iowa and stepdaughter Samantha Faith Bevans, 34 were both arrested and charged with Murder in the 1st Degree under Iowa Criminal code 707.2(1)(A).

Trials for both Talley and Samantha Bevans have been rescheduled a couple of times over the course of the last six months since their arrests. Their first trial was scheduled to begin on November 7 of last year.

Talley signed away his right to a speedy trial. His trial was set to begin on Monday, February 6, 2023 at the Benton County Courthouse, but is now set to be rescheduled for a later date.

Samantha Bevans' second trial date was set for January 23, 2023, and has now been moved to April 3, 2023.

If convicted of Murder in the 1st Degree, the State of Iowa mandates that the two receive a life sentence without the possibility of parole. 

The investigation was conducted by the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa Department of Public Safety's Criminalistics Laboratory, Benton County Medical Examiner's Office, Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, Benton County Attorney's Office and the Iowa Attorney General's Office.
