On Wednesday September 28th, 17 members from the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter attended the District Soil Judging Contest at Hawkeye Community College. In preparation for this contest, members spent many hours after school learning and practicing how to judge soil, with Mark Pingenot, who helped them prepare.
Through the weeks before the contest the members traveled to different pits and looked at the differences to become familiarized with what all of the possibilities looked like. Come contest day the teams traveled to four different pits at Hawkeye Community College and they had 25 minutes at each pit to judge.
Member Ben Buhr placed fifth and Christopher Fleming received sixth in the district with many members close behind leaving a good impression on our chapter. In addition, one of the teams from the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter placed 6th in the district. Overall the chapter had a great time at the District Soils Competition and many are looking forward to doing it again next year!
