Vinton Unlimited will begin recognizing Good Neighbors in Vinton. We will be looking for people or businesses in the community that is doing things that improve or help Vinton be a 'great place to live, shop, work, and play.' This is an effort to recognize those whose good deeds may go unnoticed, to encourage people to look for the positive things in our community, and hopefully, prompt Vintonians to participate and become "good neighbors" themselves. The goal is to encourage civic pride, which will foster the desire to 'stay local' in all the areas that help make Vinton a great place to live, shop, work, and play.

Anybody will be able to nominate anyone or any business in the community. A Vinton Unlimited committee will select up to 10 nominations to be recognized monthly. Those individuals will have a "Vinton Good Neighbor" yard sign placed in their yard for the month. Each nominee will also receive a certificate and two tickets to the Palace Theatre, as well as have a screenshot ad during movie previews to recognize them. At the end of the year, we will draw from those names and award a winner Vinton Value Dollars.

People can nominate anyone they feel should be recognized for any reason they feel is important, as long as it's something that is benefiting others in the community. For October we have selected the following people:

  • Lowell & Mary Ellen Mahr - for the work they did cleaning up the grounds around the Vinton Library during the time when it was closed.
  • Dan LaGrange (Colleen Karrick accepted on his behalf) - for taking the time to clean the underside of some of the awnings in the downtown area and not just his own.
  • Wayne Shannon - for the diligent work he's put into volunteering at Old School Produce preparing the crops for the schools and local food banks as well as helping with the harvesting.
  • Mike Elwick - for spraying the downtown area for weeds.
  • Kurt & Angie Kerkman - for remodeling a local home and bettering a Vinton neighborhood.

The first recipients received a certificate on Monday morning at City Hall.

To make a nomination, call Vinton Unlimited at 319-472-3955 or drop Melody an email at melody@vintonia.org
