For the last several years, the "old steam plant" located on West 8th St. a block north of the former Braille Sight Savings School property, has become an eye sore, at best. It's not a secret that something needed to be done with the property. With the property changing hands several times over the years, it never seemed to find the right owners that had the time and money to make it into something worth saving.
Most recently the property's rundown condition brought legal actions to the owner in both 2019 and 2022. Misty Meister has decided to put efforts into protesting the actions of the city placing signs concerning the above decisions. Signs in the front of the property bashed the ordinance enforcement officer for Vinton with accusations of "overstepping" while enforcing local ordinances.
At this time, the property owner has been cited for the following Ordinance violations:
-Work without a permit
-Tall grass and weeds
-Unsafe building
-Junk Vehicle
The property owners have been taken to court on two occasions with the following Municipal Infractions:
-Unsafe building (9/10/19) Guilty with fines and order to demolish
-Unsafe Building (6/22/21) Guilty with fines and order to demolish
The city has worked with previous and current owners to try to bring the building up to code without success.
