Across Iowa, Memorial Day is still observed with traditional Memorial Day services. The various Legion Posts across Benton County continue the custom of pausing to remember their fallen brothers and sisters during war times and those that they've lost following their service.

Each of the services includes what is called a three-volley salute, which is done with an odd number of riffles usually a minimum of 3, and a maximum of 7. In Vinton just over 50 people gathered at the George G. Luckey post to pause and remember their fallen brothers and sisters. Craig Streeter conducted the ceremony and Richard Jumper lead the group in prayer. The group met at the Legion and then gathered at the Cedar River to place a wreath in memory of those lost at sea.

At Bear Creek Cemetery more than 70 residents gathered. A ceremony was held honoring the military veterans that have been lost. The Bear Creek Church has been active for decades keeping with tradition on Memorial Day holding a breakfast of some sort to raise funds and helping to preserve the church and cemetery. Flags fly honoring the veterans who are laid to rest in the cemetery.

The Van Horne American Legion gathered at the Community Center in Van Horne. With around 70 residents in attendance, the group welcomed State Representative Tom Gerhold to speak to the group.

A Special "Thanks" Barb Geater and Van Horne Legion.
