Julia Schultis

My name is Julia Shutlis. I am the daughter of Robert and Kristine Shultis of Shellsburg. I have an older sister who attends Iowa State in Ames. I attend Vinton-Shellsburg High School and will graduate in May.

Participating in a wide variety of activities and learning new things has been especially important to me. I have been involved in band for 6 years, Benton County Youth Council for 2 years, and choir for 1 year. I have been in the Canton Upstreamers 4-H Club where I currently hold the office of president. I have also held the office of the reporter for several years. I have been in FFA for 4 years where I have competed in many events at the subdistrict, district, and state level. I received my Iowa Degree in May of 2020. I have received many other awards from both 4-H and FFA including leadership awards for projects at the county level including cooking, baking, art, home improvement, leadership, and competitions. I have competed in both horse and dog project areas.

I have also participated in Citizenship Washington Focus at The National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. While I was on this two-week trip, I learned about civic engagement through experiences at our nation's capital. I collaborated with other participants to co-write a bill to present in front of a mock House of Representatives session. I toured DC landmarks and practiced conflict resolution while addressing disagreements.

Over my 9 years in 4-H have made it a goal of mine to try a least one new project area each year. Through this, I have tried almost every project area and learned many new skills.

My future plans are to go to the Culinary Institute of America majoring in Hospitality Management in the fall of 2021. After that, I plan on having a career in the food and travel industry. I hope to one day to work for the airlines or cruise lines.
