After the derecho donations were made to the Shellsburg Area Community Group for storm recovery. After consultation with city officials it was decided the money could best be spent on trees. Following this decision, SACG learned about a grant opportunity for purchasing trees and filed an application.

We’ve received some great news!! Shellsburg will receive $8,843 in grant money from Trees Forever and Alliant Energy!! This joint effort between the SACG and the city will result in a variety of trees planted in the city parks and in the right of way near where the new fire station will be built. (The grant required that the trees be planted on public property.)

Volunteers will plant the trees on the morning of May 8th. Anyone interested in helping can meet at 8:30am at the East end of Memorial Park. We plan to purchase 61 trees so planting and mulching and watering and staking will go quickly with many helping hands. Volunteers from the local 4-H club, FFA group and volunteer firemen are pitching in, but anyone else interested in helping will be more than welcome!

Trees for Shellsburg Area Homeowners

Because we received such a generous grant for planting trees in the parks, the remaining money that had been donated for storm recovery is being set aside specifically to assist homeowners with the purchase of a tree for their property. The city asked volunteers from SACG to administer this program. A “coupon” program has been developed with Cedar River Garden Center in Palo that will give homeowners a $50 discount on a tree.

• Coupons will be handed out at the City Park pavilion on Saturday, April 3rd from 10:00am until noon and again on Wednesday, April 7th from 5:00pm to 7:00 pm. In case of inclement weather, coupons will be handed out at those times at city hall.
• 80 coupons worth $50 each available
• Homeowners who live in Shellsburg or within a 4 mile radius of Shellsburg (and not in another incorporated town) will be eligible.
• One coupon per residence, available on a first come, first served basis.
• The coupons must be used toward the purchase of a tree that is to be planted at the homeowner’s residence. Shrubs are not eligible.
• Tree should be purchased by August 15th.
• Trees purchased through this program cannot be placed in street right of way. See maps on Beacon ( for assistance in determining right of way lines.
• Trees Forever planting instructions will be handed out with coupons. Please retain and follow instructions when planting your tree.
• If you are absolutely not able to attend one of the two coupon distributions, you may contact Lori Mott after April 7th at 319-981-6411 to discuss other possible arrangements.
