After the derecho donations were made to the Shellsburg Area Community Group for storm recovery. After consultation with city officials it was decided the money could best be spent on trees. Following this decision, SACG learned about a grant opportunity for purchasing trees and filed an application.
We’ve received some great news!! Shellsburg will receive $8,843 in grant money from Trees Forever and Alliant Energy!! This joint effort between the SACG and the city will result in a variety of trees planted in the city parks and in the right of way near where the new fire station will be built. (The grant required that the trees be planted on public property.)
Volunteers will plant the trees on the morning of May 8th. Anyone interested in helping can meet at 8:30am at the East end of Memorial Park. We plan to purchase 61 trees so planting and mulching and watering and staking will go quickly with many helping hands. Volunteers from the local 4-H club, FFA group and volunteer firemen are pitching in, but anyone else interested in helping will be more than welcome!
Trees for Shellsburg Area Homeowners
Because we received such a generous grant for planting trees in the parks, the remaining money that had been donated for storm recovery is being set aside specifically to assist homeowners with the purchase of a tree for their property. The city asked volunteers from SACG to administer this program. A “coupon” program has been developed with Cedar River Garden Center in Palo that will give homeowners a $50 discount on a tree.
