Vinton faired pretty well in comparison to our neighbors a bit south of us. With power out across the town for over an hour for some, crews were able to restore power.

There were no reported injuries, so that alone is the best news.

South of Vinton the damage seemed to worsen.

The Shellsburg road found the road signs flattened most of them to ground level. Most farms in that area had damage of some kind. Some minor, some major.

The Shellsburg Elevator had some cosmetic damage but appears to be in good condition. The American Legion in Shellsburg had damage to the back wall. Several trees were down in the Shellsburg park as well.

The Sanders farm had what looked like a machine shed flattened across from the family home. The cattle lot along the highway lost the building that was on the lot. Several homes along the highway and some that you could see down the gravel roads had damage to many of the outbuildings and to some of the homes.

As a result of the storm, residents from Linn and Johnson counties and as far away as Blairstown are coming to Vinton for gas.

SA August 11, 2020, 9:38 pm Trying to follow the fate of our friends around Van Horne. We've seen horrific damage from 69th street North of town on Facebook but no local news is saying a thing. Let us know what's happening there as well.

Editor's Note: It was so bad when I went that direction earlier, I thought without a phone it would be wise to stay nearer home. I'll try to get down there at some point, sorry for the delay!
