A few weeks ago, I received an email that said, "I am turning 50 on June 15th and have decided to shave my head and donate my hair to someone in need. I was wondering if this would be something you would be interested in covering? I'm doing it In honor of my late grandmother who passed away of cancer," she explained, "it was one of the hardest things for her to accept, losing her hair," said Cindi Stueck. Cyndi explained that even suffering through various forms of cancer, for her grandmother losing her hair was the hardest. Cyndi figured there was no better time than now during this global pandemic to help someone that she doesn't know, in hopes that it would bring a smile to someone that might need a hand, or some hair. Cindi is a mother of 3 grown children and has been married to her husband Tom for 33 years. She's also a Phlebotomist, you all know what that is right, you did not, I had to google it too! She's the gal that says, "This is only going to hurt a little bit," before she takes a needle to your arm to draw blood. She also works out of Cedar Rapids doing PRN work with Unity Point Hospice and also as a part-time nurse for a traveling agency. But being "a stay home mom for 25 years and of all the things I have done, that tops them all!"
Before proceeding with her plan, Cyndi made sure that it would be alright with those that she worked with, and came away with their blessing to do so. She will be donating her hair to an organization called, "Hair we Share" that will not charge recipients for the gift. So, we met on her 50th birthday, and one of her best friends, Nina Goersh who is a retired teacher at a barber college did the honors of preparing Cyndi's hair to be cut, it just seemed natural that she should help with the event. Family members helped with the cutting of Cyndi's hair and Tom hauled a large mirror out so that Cyndi could keep an eye on the progress. "Hair we Share," asks that the donor pay a processing fee of $125 for each contribution. The organization will then add the hair to 6 or 7 other donations and make a wig to help someone who needs it. The people who send in the hair will receive a picture of the wig created with the hair and possibly the one receiving it, but it's up to the recipient if they want their photo shared. As a surprise, Cyndi's family threw a party for her, playing outdoor games and pooling money into a pot, she thought so that the winner would have a great prize, but it was a sneaky way to raise the money for her gift to someone that needed it. This isn't the first time that Cyndi has shaved her hair, she did it for her 35th birthday and is talking of doing it again, in 15 years. So stay tuned!
