In a statement from the Vinton-Shellsburg School, the school announced plans for the graduates for a "Downtown Prom." Students are invited dress up in the Prom attire or more comfortable clothing and attend the Prom in their cars.

The plans are laid out in their statement below:

"There are many challenges we face when trying to plan the 2020 Prom, here are the main ones that have affected our decision-making process:

1. Social Gathering Limitations: If the Governor opens Schools and Businesses up this summer, there will still be limitations on group gatherings for many months to come. At this time there is no information that leads us to believe that we will be allowed to sponsor gatherings of more than 10 people at any time in the near future.

2. Scheduling: If we wait until July or August, several Seniors have reported that they will be gone already for military, college, or other commitments. At some point, the Seniors need closure so they can move onto the next chapter in their lives.

3. Vendors: The vendors for Prom and Post Prom are extremely limited at this time. A lot of the vendors we use for Prom/Post Prom are unable to commit to scheduling anything over the summer months because they may not be allowed to work due to State Laws/Guidance. Most vendors have agreed to use our deposits for next year's Prom/Post Prom.

4. Health & Safety: The health and safety of everyone is our number 1 priority. How would we clean and sanitize an area with 250-300 students? It would be irresponsible for us to risk even one student or adult's health by prematurely having a large group gathering when we don't know how this pandemic will play out.

With these challenges in mind, the School Administrators and Prom/Post Prom Organizers have worked together to make some decisions about the 2020 Prom. We have decided to have a Non-Traditional Prom for a Non-Traditional School Year.

The new date for our Prom will be Friday, June 19 (June 20 Rain Date).

The 2020 Prom will be a "Downtown Prom" and will feature various locations around Vinton for Juniors and Seniors to drive up to for professional pictures, flowers, food, prizes, music, and more!

*Prom Attire will be student's choice- they can wear their Prom Dresses/Suits OR something else of their choosing.

*Pictures of all those who attend will be shared via email and on Social Media, for everyone to enjoy.

*We will have online voting for the Senior Prom Court and crowning of the 2020 Prom King and Queen.

*Ticket Prices will be $10 to help cover the cost of food.

*The time of the Downtown Prom will be determined as we know how many students will participate. Most likely it will be in the afternoon and evening.

*More details and expectations will be sent out to parents and students at a later date pending the Governor's social distancing guidelines for June. We may have to limit the number of people in cars or at each station. Social Distancing Rules and other protocols as outlined by public health and the governor's office will be followed."
