In the moon of the Salmon run, Mother of Mother Nature was fishing from her cloud in the heavens. The fish had been reluctant to give themselves to her but she cast her line in hopeful arcs. Deciding to move to a new spot as any good angler would, she spied a river that was unfamiliar to her. "Why not!?," she thought. Down went her line and on the first cast she had a hit. And what a mighty hit it was. The pole bent and the line strained as the great fish was pulled from the river. Higher and higher the fish went. As it drew close enough for her to see, a shiver of fear went through Mother of Mother Nature. "What is this fish?," passed through her lips. The great fish spoke to her and said, "I am Wally the Walleye. What do you want of me?" By now the fish was nearly as high as the clouds and not used to hearing a fish talk, Mother of Mother Nature shook with fear. The line went slack and Wally was off the hook. Now Wally was a lucky fish because he was falling straight back to the river from which he came, but not that lucky. Wally was so excited as he cleared the trees along the river that he did not notice the abandoned windmill standing on the bank. Driven with the speed from his fall, Wally was impaled on the very top of the windmill. Unable to remove Wally from the tower, Mother of Mother Nature was resigned to leave him there. While it is true that Wally no longer swims the river, he does provide a service to all within his sight. Wally the Wallleye is now Wally the Weathervane.
