Andrew Wirth, the first VS male cheerldeader, says participating the the musical "Bring It On," inspired him to want to join the squad.[/caption]
Participating in last year's Vinton-Shellsburg High School production of "Bring It On," gave Andrew Wirth the idea that maybe guys, too, could enjoy being cheerleaders.
Now, Andrew has made history as the first male cheerleader in V-S history. He has been practicing with the 15 girls on the football cheerleading squad and attending camps. On Friday, he joined the 15 females on the squad for all of the traditional Friday night cheerleading activities.
Andrew says most of the student body has been accepting of his new role. He says he has been teased some, but most of it is good-natured.
Already, Andrew is making a difference for VS cheerleading, says coach Krystal Anderson.
"With not ever having a male cheerleader, we had to figure out the specifics for a uniform for him and get one ordered," says Anderson. "But otherwise there really hasn't had to be any adjustments. He's been a great addition to the squad and everyone gets along well. The girls treat him just like another cheerleader. We're looking forward to the season, and who knows maybe it'll convince some more guys to tryout."
