AmeriCorps NCCC Team Maple 5 is assisting the Wapello County Long Term Disaster Recovery Organization (WCLTDR) with disaster recovery efforts as a result of the summer floods of 2010.
Approximately 500 applications were submitted to FEMA by persons who had losses or damage to their dwellings from the flooding of the Des Moines River. The WCLTDR is a nonprofit, voluntary organization dedicated to assisting disaster survivors to mitigate their losses and recover to the point where they can move ahead with life.
For this to be accomplished, the NCCC team of eleven is assisting WCLTDR with contacting the 500 applicants, identifying the applicants unmet needs, assessing the seriousness of their situation and triaged so that the survivors can be provided assistance in finding the resources to recover.
Once the information has been collected it will be given to WCLTDR executive committee for resourcing. Special emphasis will be placed on those over sixty, those with special needs, and those in poverty.
The NCCC team is in Ottumwa until December 18, 2010 when they will return to Vinton.
